Spreadsheet for checking the capacity of vertically loaded single skin walls, the approach is very similar to that used formerly in British Standard BS5628 & principally involves checking that the design demand vertical load NED is less than or equal to the design capacity or resistance NRD. This is done by deriving the masonry units required air dried mean compressive strength [ROW158], units to be used must have a declared air dried compressive strength at least equal to this demand stated within the manufacturers product information.
This spreadsheet calculates the Design Vertical Load resistance (DVLR) per linear meter for a single leaf wall, and is based around the examples 10.1 TO 10.2 presented in Design of Structural Elements by Chanakya Arya 3rd Edition.

SHEET 2 -BASED ON YOUR INPUT IN SHEET 1, DERIVES THE REQUUIRED CHARACTERISTIC COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE MASONRY. SHOULD THIS BE INSUFFICIENT IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO LOOK FOR WAYS TO REDUCE THE LOADING DEMAND (SHEET 1) OR MOVE TO STRONGER (MATERIALS SHEET 3).
SHEET 3 – AS ABOVE, THIS FINAL PAGE ALLOWS YOU TO ADJUST THE MATERIALS, (MASONRY UNITS & MORTAR) TO OPTIMISE OR INCREASE THE DESIGN STRENGH (RESISTANCE) NRD. [ROW 158] DECLARES THE REQUIRED AIR DRIED MEAN COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH WHICH SHOULD BE MET IN THE MANUFACTURERS PRODUCT DECLARATIONS.
